What Is OpenTabs?

OpenTabs is a non-profit startup aiming to end poverty and stop climate change in innovative ways. Our mission is to be the most affordable and convenient way of having an impact. For this reason, we created a free web browser extension that allows you to passively raise funds towards providing microloans, saving rainforests, and preventing malaria, simply by opening new tabs.

Just think of how many tabs you open, and now imagine changing the world by doing just that. Download OpenTabs and start making an impact with no additional effort. Changing the world has never been easier.

How does it work?

Our idea is so simple that you are bound to fall in love with it. Our extension replaces your default new tab page and includes cool features such as an improved layout and stunning background pictures. We place a couple banner advertisements in the corner and raise about 1/10 of a cent per tab. Although small, just think of how many tabs you open in a day, month, or year, and multiply that by everyone that has a browser! We're not joking when we say that making an impact has never been easier.

Providing Microloans

Worldwide, a staggering 1.7 billion adults are unbanked, with a disproportionate 56% of whom are women in developing countries. Through platforms such as Kiva, we provide microloans as small as $25 (typically lasting 8-18 months and receiving no interest) to help individuals break from the poverty trap. Microloans are essential in helping the financially excluded to start and grow their businesses (be it a shop or a farm for example) or improve their living conditions (by building a sanitary toilet or a solar powered stove for example).

Microloans are a helping hand in empowering struggling individuals to create new opportunities for themselves as well as their families and communities. They are a very sustainable form of aid because once repaid, they can be loaned out countless of times and have an immense ripple effect. By opening tabs, you can now raise funds towards providing microloans and lifting families out of poverty.

Saving Rainforests

Rainforests are the lungs of the Earth, they absorb 30% of our carbon emissions and are home to 90% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. But each day, nearly 70,000 acres are lost from agricultural development and logging, threatening countless species with extinction. Tropical deforestation accounts for up to 15% of net global carbon emissions each year. This is equivalent to every car, truck, bus, plane ship and train on the planet combined.

We are partnering with Rainforest Trust to protect our rainforests, help prevent deforestation and decrease global emissions. By simply opening tabs, you can help raise funds to save rainforests and fight climate change. Halting tropical deforestation and allowing for regrowth could mitigate up to 50% of net global emissions through 2050. We must act now.

Preventing Malaria

Malaria is a disease that is transmitted through disease-carrying mosquitoes, killing around 400,000 people a year and infecting upwards of 200 million. It is a preventable disease, which pregnant women and children are particularly vulnerable to, with 70% of its deaths being children under the age of 5. We are supporting the Against Malaria Foundation with regular donations. 100% of the donations we make to AMF will be used to buy nets and you can follow where the nets we fund are distributed by clicking here.

This disease is a significant burden on the livelihood of sub-Saharan Africans and their economy (where 90% of malaria deaths occur). It is estimated that every €1 spent fighting malaria increases their GDP by €12. By opening tabs, you can now raise funds towards donating long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), the most effective method of prevention.
